‘Normal People’ Stars Paul Mescal & Daisy Edgar-Jones Reunite for Charity Screening

Could another season of Normal People be on the horizon? It was one theory sparked by the social media post shared by the show’s stars Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones, but one that has since been debunked.

The real-life friends took to Instagram where they shared a selfie featuring them holding up peace signs with the caption, “We’ve got some news to share!!” with the added note, “Watch this space.” So, what could it mean? Posted on Tuesday, May 28, the tease is left fans hanging until the duo finally revealed what they’re working on together.

As mentioned, above, speculation around a Normal People connection was strong, and ultimately not wrong as Element Pictures, the Irish-based television production company that distributed the series via Hulu, also shared the photo of Mescal and Edgar-Jones with the added emoji of eyes, which hinted they were in on the tease.

Instead of being a new season of Normal People, it’s a charity reunion that is being hosted in London. In a new video shared to both Edgar-Jones and Mescal’s Instagram stories, they teased their attendance at a big season screening of Normal People that would raise funds for Pieta and Unicef.

Pieta is Ireland’s suicide and self-harm prevention charity, while UNICEF funds would go toward helping children in conflict territories like Gaza. By donating, fans will enter to win a ticket to the screening happening on June 16th in London where Edgar-Jones and Mescal will be in attendance with other members of the cast and creative team. You can learn more about the event here.

As for misleading fans into thinking a second season was on the horizon, the costars were apologetic but optimistic. “We are incredibly sorry if we led people on… it’s not a Season 2,” Mescal began their video before Edgar-Jones chimed in to say, “No, not yet!”

While Mescal echoed her sentiment by adding, that there’s “loads of time” for another season in the future, she added there was “still time” and for fans to “keep the faith.”

“Please, god,” Mescal noted, before launching into the explanation behind their upcoming reunion in the video, which you can see here.

Normal People premiered on Hulu in April 2020, becoming a quick hit among viewers as the adaptation of Sally Rooney’s 2018 novel introduced audiences to Connell (Mescal) and Marianne (Edgar-Jones). The series followed their story from the final days of their youth in a small town in the west of Ireland and tracked their undergraduate years at Trinity College.

The series marked Mescal’s television debut and earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series in 2021. Mescal has since gone on to earn an Oscar nomination for Lead Actor in the film Aftersun.

Normal People made both Mescal and Edgar-Jones bona fide stars who have gone on to feature in other top-notch projects. While Mescal has earned acclaim for his role in All of Us Strangers with Andrew Scott, Edgar-Jones has gone on to star alongside Andrew Garfield in FX‘s Under the Banner of Heaven and the film Where the Crawdads Sing.
