TRI-CITIES, Wash.-Fireworks are a popular way to ring in New Year’s, however, it’s important to think of people who may be suffering from Veteran Post Traumatic Stress Disorder before celebrating loudly.
New Year’s Eve fireworks displays have become ubiquitous, but for some military veterans the loud explosions may trigger PTSD.
According to the National Center for PTSD, symptoms can start anywhere from a few months to years after service and may come and go, being triggered by different factors.
Fireworks are one trigger as they can be a reminder of trauma endured in combat, a fire, explosion or gun violence.
The VA offers several PTSD resources online, including coping tips, therapy and where to find help.
Those ringing in the New Year with fireworks should be mindful of any veterans nearby who may be affected and should consider checking with veterans first to make sure they are alright with noisy celebrations.
