OLYMPIA, Wash.-Starting in January, the Department of Children, Youth and Families will have the authority to investigate child abuse or neglect at behavioral health facilities, residential private schools and host homes.
Under State Bill 5515, patients, students and families of loved ones can report suspected abuse or neglect to DCYF, rather than directly to law enforcement.
According to a DCYF press release, the agency will also have the legal authority to investigate alleged abuse substance use disorder treatment facilities and mental health facilities.
“The safety of children and youth is our agency’s number one priority and this change gives us another avenue to reach families who need support,” said Ruben Reeves, Assistant Secretary of Licensing.
According to the DCYF, allegations of abuse or neglect will be assigned to investigators who will make a finding as to whether the alleged abuse occurred.
The public may report suspected child abuse or neglect to child protective services (CPS) by calling 1-866-END-HARM (866-363-4276).
