9-1-1: Lone Star might be coming to an end with its fifth season, but series’ creators Ryan Murphy and Tim Minear are working on a brand new spinoff for ABC.

Speaking to Variety, Murphy confirmed, “Tim Minear and I are working on a new spinoff that we’re actually writing and that we hope to get on the air next fall.”

9-1-1 was created by Murphy, Minear, and Brad Falchuk and premiered on Fox on January 3, 2018. Fox canceled the series in May 2023, but ABC swooped in and saved the show. However, spinoff Lone Star, which premiered on January 19, 2020, will not be making the transition to ABC.

“Sadly, we all love Lone Star, but the financials just didn’t work,” Murphy explained. “It’s a Disney company that was on a Fox network, and it just was never going to work. And we had a long run of it. So now we’re going to launch a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s fun.”

The seventh season of 9-1-1 premiered on ABC on March 14, 2024, and was quickly renewed for an eighth season, which premiered on September 26, 2024.

“9-1-1 moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday night,” Muphy added. “They obviously have an appetite for that, so we’re going to give them another one that I really love.”

Lone Star starred Rob Lowe as firefighter Owen Strand alongside Ronen Rubinstein, Jim Parrack, Natacha Karam, Brian Michael Smith, Rafael L. Silva, Julian Works, and Gina Torres.

In an interview with Variety back in August, Lowe said of the fifth and final season of Lone Star, “We all went into it pretty much knowing that it was going to be the last season, so that affected everything we did. We wanted to really show everybody what is still possible in network television if people have the appetite to do it.”

“We wanted to go out making our case for the value of shows like that, and I think we did a really good job,” he continued. “The stories that we were able to tell on a weekly basis in terms of the scope and scale — that’s probably the thing I’m the most proud of. They were truly like mini-movies every week.”

The final season of Lone Star premiered on September 23, 2024.
