WASHINGTON, D.C.-The Navy identified the two pilots missing since a crash east of Mount Rainier on Oct. 15.
The two pilots, Lt. Commander Lyndsay Evans and Lt. Serena Wileman, were declared dead by the Navy on Oct. 20.
Washington Sen. Patty Murray issued the following statement in response to the Navy’s declaration on Oct. 21.
“I am heartbroken to learn about the passing of Lt. Commander Lyndsay Evans. I was honored to have met her at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, and I am deeply grateful for her courage and sacrifice in service to our country. She was a leader who broke barriers and made history.”
Sen. Murray went on to provide the following statement in regards to Lt. Serena Wileman.
““Similarly, I want to express my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Lt. Serena Wileman. Our servicemembers put their lives on the line every day—their bravery exemplifies the best of America. As we mourn the passing of these two courageous heroes, we must remember our commitment to honor them not only with words but by supporting the families they leave behind. I am so proud of both of these women for their trailblazing careers—their service has no doubt made a difference, clearing a path for the women who will come after them. The families and friends of Lt. Commander Evans and Lt. Wileman are in my thoughts during this difficult time.”
