RICHLAND, Wash. – The sun is shining, and the hot temperatures are returning, but that doesn’t mean the fun stops. The Richland Parks and Rec Department is wrapping up a national tradition dating back to the mid-1980s.
According to the National Recreation and Parks Association, July was designated National Parks and Recreation Month in 1985. This year’s theme is “Where you belong.” The theme celebrates a sense of belonging in communities nationwide through various inclusive programs for all ages.
Jen Davis, a Recreation Coordinator for Richland Parks and Rec, said the city of Richland has over 60 well-maintained parks, most of which have playgrounds for kids. Davis said that for her, one park stands out above the rest.
“One of my favorite parks is Goethals,” Davis said. Goethals is more of a nature park. Honestly, I can’t remember how many years ago we actually helped make a difference in the day design and get different elements in the park.”
According to Davis, all summer, Richland Parks and Rec hosted pop-up play dates with different themes. She said they partnered with many other organizations around the community to give families something to do while school is out. Davis said events like the play dates help bring the community together.
“It gives parents, grandparents, and babysitters opportunities to get their kids out to a different environment,” said Davis. “Going to the different parks in different neighborhoods has been a great opportunity to bring families from that neighborhood to the park and play.
Davis said their last pop-up play date is on August 20 at Goethals Park. The theme is “Dino Dig,” and kids will be able to dig up fossils and learn about them and the rocks in our area.
The parks around Richland also have fun things to do for adults. Davis said earlier this year, the department opened an outdoor fitness area in Howard Amon Park to encourage people to get outdoors and enjoy the parks.
Davis said with the summer programs ending soon, Richland Parks and Rec will focus on planning fun events for the fall.
