NACHES, Wash. – The Naches Fire Department is getting an upgrade to its airpacks through a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant worth a total of $691,335.

The grant is split between NFD, Nile-Cliffdell Fire & Rescue District 14 and the Highland Fire Department to upgrade their self-contained breathing apparatus, also known as airpacks.

Airpacks allow for crews to enter burning structures and areas and be able to breathe. NFD says its current packs comply to standards from 2002 and were well-used by the time the department got them handed down from the City of Yakima.

With the grant, NFD says it will transition its focus to replacing its 26-year-old Engine 213.
