HELENA, Mont. – Residents and visitors in Helena are being urged to exercise caution after a mountain lion was recently spotted on Mount Helena.
Warning signs have been posted at trailheads near the Tubbs Trailhead and Silverette Gate to alert the public.
Officials advise those recreating in open lands to take precautions. They recommend avoiding running or hiking alone, keeping pets on a leash, and ensuring children stay close. Carrying a deterrent device is also suggested.
In the event of encountering a mountain lion, officials emphasize the importance of slowly backing away. They stress not to run, as this could provoke the animal.
To deter the mountain lion, people should try to appear larger by raising their arms or waving a jacket. Talking or yelling loudly and maintaining eye contact with the animal are also recommended strategies.
Officials remind everyone to remain aware of their surroundings while enjoying the outdoors.
