MISSOULA, Mont. – Residents in the Missoula area are dealing with the aftermath of multiple windstorms that have caused significant damage over the last month. Alongside home repairs and removal services, locals need to watch out for potential scammers.

Malcolm Miller, Superintendent of Treasure State Tree Service in Missoula, has been busy handling the fallout from these storms. According to Miller, scam artists often flood into towns after such events, attempting to overcharge or solicit homeowners for unnecessary work.

“I’ve seen companies… This storm. I’ve seen companies as far away as Iowa in Missoula, door knocking people and people have to be really careful because… Maybe whoever they’re dealing with or speaking to is licensed and ensured in their home state or home locality…. They’re not necessarily licensed and insured to work in Montana,” said Miller.

Miller mentioned reports of out-of-state contractors in Missoula attempting to scam, including instances where workers have injured themselves while performing removal services. He emphasized that liability could fall on the homeowners if such incidents occur.

To avoid these scammers, Miller advises residents to shop locally and thoroughly vet removal services. This includes asking about insurance policies, certifications, and references.

“If those workers were to get hurt… then liability could fall on homeowners,” he said.

Miller also highlighted the importance of asking detailed questions since these projects could cost tens of thousands of dollars.

In a final note of caution, Miller added that legitimate contractors won’t typically call homeowners unsolicited to offer their services. Missoula residents should remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
