PASCO, Wash. – The NAACP is speaking at a Pasco City Council meeting on Mon., Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. in regards to “crucial matters concerning the Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Center in Pasco.”

NAACP Chapter President Irving L. Brown Sr. stated in a petition that the MLK Center has fallen into disrepair due to lack of maintenance, budget cuts and reallocation of funds.

The petition requests that the City Council allocates funds to restore the MLK Center, develops a plan for its renovation, engages with the community to ensure it meets community needs and gives an explanation for funds being reallocated.

“For decades, the MLK Center has stood as a beacon of hope and support for our community,” said Brown. “From the challenging times of sundown cities to the present day, the Center has been a cornerstone for many, offering vital services to our marginalized communities. It is for these reasons that we need to work together as a community, along with city staff, the city council, and our funding organizations.”

The meeting takes place at Pasco City Hall and can also be viewed on a livestream and the City’s Facebook page.
