Man found guilty of attacking, cutting man with knife in Wapato

YAKIMA, Wash. – A 43-year-old man was found guilty on Wed., May 15 for attacking a man with a knife in Wapato, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Washington.

Joey Anthony Andy will be sentenced on Sept. 17 for one count of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Evidence shown at the trial showed that on April 4, 2023, a man was leaving the Noah’s Ark Homeless Shelter in Wapato when he was confronted by Andy. Andy believed that the man had stolen his Bluetooth speaker.

Andy shoved the man then pulled out a knife and swung at him, leaving a four-inch cut in the side of his head. This cut required 14 staples to close.

After the attack, the man returned to Noah’s Ark and received first aid. The Wapato Police Department arrived later and found Andy in a nearby neighborhood where they took him into custody after a short chase.

“Prosecuting violent crime occurring on Tribal land in the Eastern District of Washington is a major priority for the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” said U.S. Attorney Vanessa Waldref. “Mr. Andy carried out a violent attack in broad daylight that left his victim with a serious injury.”
