SUNNYSIDE, Wash. – A 32-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead Tuesday morning at the Sunnyside City Jail, according to the Sunnyside Police Department.
The man was found unresponsive at 9:42 a.m. in his cell with his cellmate. The Sunnyside Fire Department responded and was unable to revive him.
SPD says the man was arrested and booked into the jail on March 29 after being cleared by a medical professional for a pre-existing medical issue.
SPD notes that the medical issue he was screened for was not related to the arrest or use of force during the arrest.
There was no signs of an assault in the cell. An investigation is ongoing through the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office and the Yakima County Coroner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
