YAKIMA, Wash. – A man was arrested on Tuesday after allegedly purchasing and using caltrops to pierce tires in Yakima.

Yakima Police say caltrops are multi-pointed spikes that are used to affect traffic by piercing and deflating tires. Since 2021, YPD says the use of caltrops have harmed several drivers’ tires along West Chestnut Avenue.

During an investigation, Homeland Security Investigations Yakima reportedly shared information with YPD saying that a man in the area had purchased items matching the description of caltrops.

Detectives with YPD obtained a search warrant for a home on West Chestnut Avenue and arrested the man for malicious mischief. Evidence of the caltrops were reportedly found at the home.

“I want to thank the dedicated officers and detectives who worked to arrest this individual,” said Interim Chief Shawn Boyle. “This case demonstrates our unwavering commitment to public safety and we appreciate the support and extend our gratitude to our partnering agencies who made this possible.”
