Make smoke alarms work for you during Fire Prevention Week

OLYMPIA, Wash.-National Fire Prevention Week runs through Oct. 12 and serves as a good reminder to check the smoke alarms in your home.

The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work For You.”

According to the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office, there were 40 fire deaths in Washington State in 2023 that occurred in places where smoke alarms should have been installed.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is encouraging everyone to participate in fire prevention week by checking the smoke alarms in their homes and replacing them if need be.

Tips from the Washington State Fire Marshal to make smoke alarms work for you.

Make sure smoke alarms are in every room of your house and on every level, even the basement.Schedule a reminder to test your alarms monthly.Replace the batteries yearly or when the alarm chirps.Check the back of your alarms for the manufacture date and replace if it’s over 10 years old.Consider interconnected smoke alarms for your home.
