Mabton man sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting man in the back

MABTON, Wash. – A Mabton man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a shooting another man near Mabton High School in April 2020, according to the Mabton Police Department.

Court documents say deputies arrived at a home on the 500 block of East B Street at 11:03 a.m. on April 12 with reports of a gunshot victim.

Two witnesses of the shooting said that Rudy Peralez, 43, was dropping them off at the home when he confronted another man. The two got into an argument which resulted in Peralez pulling out a gun and shooting him in the back as he was running towards the house.

Two other witnesses gave a similar description of the confrontation. After the shooting, witnesses say Peralez got into the vehicle he had arrived in and drove away.

Video footage of the incident from the nearby Mabton High School confirmed the statements from witnesses.

Per court documents, at the time of the shooting, Peralez had five previous felony convictions including four burglary convictions and one unlawful firearm possession conviction.

Peralez was charged for first degree assault, drive-by shooting and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Peralez was found guilty in the Yakima County Superior Court for first degree assault with a deadly weapon while the other charges were dismissed. He was sentenced on March 25, 2024.
