Lutheran Community Services Northwest to host foster care panel at Union Library in Kennewick

KENNEWICK, Wash – May is National Foster Care Awareness Month. Lutheran Community Services Northwest wants to provide information to the community about how to become a foster parent or to help those in the foster care system.

According to Kelsey Doerr, the Foster Parent Recruiter with Lutheran Community Services Northwest, they help teenagers find foster homes. She says there are different needs in homes that are hard to place with, such as finding it difficult to find foster parents who are willing to foster teenagers or sibling groups LCSNW wants to keep together. Doerr said this is the first time LCSNW hosted a panel, which is something where community members can get questions answered on how to help.

“The goal is really to open up that divide for people that are a part of the foster care system and those who are not,” Doerr said. “Hopefully, we can share a little bit more of what the experience looks like.”

Not only will Lutheran Community Services Northwest be there, but Coordinated Care, Treehouse, and other placement agencies will also be there to answer some of the most common questions they get.

The panel will be at the Mid-Columbia library off of Union St. in Kennewick starting at 4 in the afternoon. The panel will have speakers, a Q and A session, and tables set up around the library for some one-on-one questions and answers.
