Luis Tiant, Red Sox pitcher who tossed two complete games in 1975 World Series dead at 83

BOSTON, Mass.-Red Sox legend Luis Tiant has died at age 83.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family, friends and fans of three-time All-Star Luis Tiant, who has passed away at 83,” MLB said in announcing Tiant’s death on social media.

Affectionately known as “El Tiante,” the Cuban born pitcher led the Red Sox to the brink of a championship in the 1975 World Series.

Tiant started three games for the Red Sox in the 1975 World Series against Pete Rose and the Cincinnati Reds, pitching a total of 25 innings in the series with two complete games, according to MLB.

Tiant, who won 229 games over a 19-year career, reportedly died at his home in Maine, according to NBC news reporting on his death.
