YAKIMA, Wash.-Valley Environmental Services field staff are conducting free well water testing for residents of the lower Yakima Valley.

The free well testing is being done as part of the Safe Drinking Water Initiative, a two-year program offering free testing in the lower valley, according to the Yakima Health District.

“Offering free nitrate testing helps us protect the health of our community and address concerns around water quality,” said Shawn Magee, Director of Environmental Health with the Yakima Health District.

According to the YHD, elevated nitrates in drinking water can pose serious health risks, particularly to infants and pregnant women and the free testing is part of YHD, Yakima County Public Services and the Department of Health to address elevated nitrate levels in the groundwater of the lower valley.

Homes and businesses with private or shared wells can request a free test of their wells and Valley Environmental Services will then collect water samples.

Lower Valley residents can find out if they qualify for a free test and request a test by calling 1-866-886-7117.
