Longtime swim dock at Howard Amon Park retired due to increase in cyanotoxins

RICHLAND, Wash. – The swim dock at Howard Amon Park in Richland was removed from the water for good on Tuesday.

Richland Parks and Recreation says the dock, which was placed on the shoreline midway between Lee Boulevard and Newton Street, was removed out of caution for the increased presence of cyanotoxins in the water over recent years, including in summer 2023 when levels higher than recreational guidelines were found.

The City also says the downstream side of the dock ended up collecting debris.

Unsafe cyanotoxin levels have yet to be detected by the Benton Franklin Health District in 2024 and swimming along the Howard Amon shoreline is still permitted at the swimmer’s risk.

The decision was made during public City of Richland meetings with suggestions from BFHD.
