Local track athletes to compete for spot on Olympic team at trials in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore.-Three athletes with local ties will compete for spots on the U.S. Olympic team at the Track and Field Team Trials in Eugene June 21-30.

Marisa Howard (Vander Malle),31, a Pasco High and Boise State graduate will run the 3,000 meter women’s steeplechase on June 24.

Howard previously competed in the steeplechase in both the 2019 and 2023 Pan American Games, according to the Team USA website.

Dash Sirmon, a Walla Walla High School graduate and current sophomore at the University of Nebraska will compete in the Javelin in Eugene with a shot at Paris on the line.

College Place graduate Kenneth Rooks,24, the 2023 NCAA Track and Field Steeplechase Champion, will run the 3,000 meter men’s steeplechase at the Olympic Trials, according to USA Track and Field.

The 2024 Paris Olympics are July 26 through Aug. 11 and can be seen on NBC.
