BENTON CITY, Wash. –
As we get closer to the holidays many people are looking for that perfect gift for their family, however local shelters are urging people are asking people to avoid giving animals as surprise gifts.
“People shouldn’t be giving their families pets for the holidays as a surprise, it should be a family choice so that way we know its a perfect for all parties involved” said Elizabeth Norman, Board Member at The Pitbull Pen.
Norman tells NonStop Local that The Pitbull Pen wants people to ease into pet ownership rather than dive right in. Norman says volunteering is a great way to not only get acquainted with the animals but it lets them get acquainted to you. Norman says fostering is also a great option for people who want to have an animal in the house but don’t want to commit to fully being responsible for them.
Adoption Process:
1. Fill out an application (for a specific dog or general application to be matched with a dog)
2. Meet with the shelter’s Adoption Coordinator
3. Schedule a time to meet with the dog/dogs that work best for your family.
Norman tells NonStop Local that this process is specific for The Pitbull Pen and that the process as a whole can take up to a week to complete. Norman says that most of the people working at the shelter are only volunteers so they try to get through as many applications as they can.
The Pitbull Pen is located at 22206 Kennedy Rd, Benton City, WA 99320.
