Local Mechanic offers advice on getting your car ready for winter

TRI-CITIES, Wash. – Snow is forecasted in the Tri-Cities according to NonStop Local’s Chief Meteorologist Monty Webb. One Local mechanic said it’s essential to make sure your car is ready for the winter conditions.

The cold temperatures are here, and Matt Ducat, the Owner of Steve’s Tire and Auto Repair said there are a few things you want to check on your vehicle so you don’t become stranded.

Ducat said ensuring your vehicle has the proper fluids is the most important thing because the cold can wreak havoc on your fluids, especially those that are water-based.

“Especially washer fluid, expansion of washer fluid that’s not protected to certain levels can expand inside the tank and cause plastic to crack,” Ducat said.

Ducat said the fluid level isn’t the only thing to watch; he said the PH level and the protection level against the cold weather are just as important.

According to Ducat, there are some things you can do at home to make sure your car is ready.

“You always want to make sure the vehicle is not hot,” he said. “Checking coolant under pressure can sometimes be dangerous. Coolant bottles are under a lot of pressure so if the vehicle is hot, you can relieve that pressure and burn your hand. Ensure your coolant is topped off and that the chemical composition is good for winter; the same applies to washer fluid.”

Ducat said he recommends having an all-weather tire over an all-season tire and making sure you’re paying attention to the tire thread before you head out.

Ducat recommends having your car looked at by a professional mechanic before the winter weather hits.
