KENNEWICK, Wash.- Halloween is an exciting time for kids and teens but there are a few safety reminders Kennewick Police Department and Franklin County Fire District #3 want you to remember.
According to KPD, cars pose the highest risk. They suggest that families planning to go trick-or-treating consider adding glowsticks or reflective tape to costumes to ensure that drivers can spot you and your kids.
For drivers, KPD says you should drive slower than usual especially if you live in a residential area. Kids can get excited and run out into the road before looking.
In addition to adding something to make kids more visible, Franklin County Fire District #3 recommends checking to see if the costume drags. Costumes that are too long can create tripping hazards.
KPD says you should consider using face paint instead of a mask to make sure kids have full visibility.
According to Franklin County Fire District 3 Fire Chief Mike Harris, 300 house fires are caused by decorations each year. He recommends checking all extension cords or electrical connections and avoiding using candles if possible.
A common concern around Halloween is candy tampering. According to Sergeant Mike Rosane with Kennewick Police Department, He has never encountered it however, it’s still a good idea to stay vigilant.
“There’s always the possibility, it isn’t anything that I’ve ever experienced or directly or heard of,” said Sergeant Rosane “but it’s not a good idea at the end of the night to check your kids Candy. Just make sure there isn’t anything in there that shouldn’t be in there. Food allergies, any of those kinds of things.”
