KENNEWICK, Wash.–Eight kittens were taken to their forever homes within a couple of hours of an adoption event today at the Kennewick Mid-Columbia Libraries location.
The Tri-City Kitty Rescue, a non-profit organization, hosts multiple adoption events a year, including events at the library once a month.
Board member Kevin Meiges said these events make the world of a difference for the kittens in need because a person can fall in love with the kitten and has a new best friend for the next 15 years.
“Events like these are to find the kittens home. The rescue takes them in, we do neonatal through eight weeks, and we get them healthy, get them spayed and neuter appointments, and then try to adopt them,” he said. “One of our main missions is to reduce the feral population, and this is a good way to do it, to get them out into homes.”
There is a high population of feral kittens in the Tri-Cities, and Meiges said the rescue tries to do everything they can to make sure the almost 400 kittens that came to the rescue this year go to safe and loving homes.
“Everything helps. There’s some other programs out there that are also helping with the trap and release for the ferals, but we try to get the kittens out into homes,” he said.
These events aren’t only great for the kittens, but also for volunteers like Jack Hammond, who said he loves spending time with the kittens and the people who get to take them home.
“My mom just decided to start fostering cats, and I kind of fell in love with just all the little kitties and getting to play around with them,” he said. “I love coming here and watching them go to their forever homes.”
