KENNEWICK, Wash. – The Kennewick Police Department held their two-day long annual active shooter scenario training at Amistad Elementary, where both KPD and KSD officers trained.
The first day of training, Aug. 8, saw nearly 40 KPD officers at the elementary school, where they ran multiple drills for multiple scenarios. Along with them were members of the Kennewick Fire Department and school security officers with the Kennewick School District.
Sgt. Michael Rosane with the Kennewick Police Department’s Special Service Division, said that their number one priority is eliminating the threat.
“Safety is our number one priority of all the citizens of Kennewick and especially in our schools,” said Rosane.
The Kennewick School District has commissioned officers in it’s high schools and middle schools, and recently, have established safety officers in elementary schools.
Scott Child, the School Safety Coordinator with the Kennewick School District, says that these trainings are designed to make the kids feel safe.
“We don’t do surprise drills here.. our ultimate goal is to make our school safer and to provide a space where kids feel safe,” said Child.
