KENNEWICK, WA.- The Kennewick High School robotics team “Lions Byte” #9613 is headed to the World Championships in Houston Texas.

The rookie team formed just 5 months ago. Since then students have built a nearly 10-pound robot from scratch.

Kennewick High School competes through FIRST Robotics. The team is made up of 6 boys and 5 girls.

Lions Byte will compete against 607 teams and 30 countries. They will be joined by 23 other Pacific Northwest teams including Umatilla High School.

According to the team’s portfolio, they are the first Tri-Cities robotics team to be formed in 10 years.

The robot has been programmed to perform a series of tasks within a limited amount of time. The goal is to score as many points as possible while working with other alliance teams.

Many of the students did not have previous experience with competitive robotics.

“We are so happy to be able to represent Kennewick and the Tri-Cities at a world level. Like, there’s not a lot of STEM and robotics nearby us so we really want to introduce that to our community and help grow our program even further. To allow more opportunities for future generations and kids coming through the Kennewick School District.” Said Camryn Lewandowski, Lions Byte’s Outreach coordinator.
