KENNEWICK, Wash.-Kennewick High School Administration has created an updated student cell phone policy ahead of the first day of school on Aug. 28.

According to a newsletter from Kennewick High to students and families obtained by NonStop Local, the updated school policy will fully comply with Kennewick School District policy 3308 and is intended to improve student “participation” in all classes.

Under Kennewick High’s new cell phone policy, phones must be put away in all classrooms unless permission is given by a teacher.

Students will be allowed to access their phones during passing periods, at lunch and before and after school, according to the newsletter.

If parents need to contact their student with an urgent message they should contact the KHS main office at 509-222-7100.

According to KHS, the goal of our Personal Electronic Device policy is to increase student engagement in the classroom and create a culture of respect for learning. All classrooms at KHS have a default “No Personal Electronic Devices” policy in place.

KHS Administration expects full cooperation from students and hopes to avoid conflict or disciplinary action, according to the letter to students and families, however, a discipline progression system has been set up to deal with unauthorized cell phone use in the classroom.

Disciplinary action for not meeting personal electronic device expectations.

1st Incident: Students will be asked to give up their device and fill out a “personal electronic device form” and pick up their device after school from their teacher.2nd Incident: Students will be asked to give up their phone, get it after school and the teacher will contact the student’s parent.3rd Incident: Students will be asked to turn their phone in at the Attendance Office and parents will be asked to pick the phone up after school.4th Incident or more: Student must meet with an Administrator, parents must pick up the phone after school and further disciplinary action may be taken based on KSD’s discipline matrix.

KHS’ new cell phone policy will begin the first day of school and will be explained to all students by their teachers.
