KENNEWICK, Wash. – The Kennewick Fire Department fought a fire in a classroom portable Monday evening, according to a press release from Fire Chief Chad Michael.

Michael says crews were sent to the 400 block of West Railroad Avenue at 6:39 p.m. for reports of a structure fire, though it was later upgraded to a residential fire.

Crews found heavy smoke coming from a classroom portable sitting next to several other portables within 50 feet of a large commercial building. Crews began extinguishing the fire and searched for anyone stuck inside the portable.

Michael reports that no one was found inside, however evidence shows that someone had previously broken in and was using the portable as a home. Crews believe the fire was human caused, however the exact cause is still under investigation.

KFD and the Kennewick Police Department urges anyone that sees suspicious activity like people entering area where they don’t belong to call 911.
