OLYMPIA, Wash.-Aug. 26 is National Women’s Equality Day, a celebration of the adoption of the 19th Amendment in 1920, according to the Department of State.
National Women’s Equality Day was officially recognized by Congress in 1973 and has been celebrated on Aug. 26 every year since.
President Joe Biden issued a proclamation on National Women’s Equality Day on Monday, Aug. 26, which read in part:
“On Women’s Equality Day, we recognize the courage of generations of visionaries who fought tirelessly for the sacred cause of women’s suffrage and all those who continue to work toward a more equitable future for women and girls in America.”
Washington Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) issued the following statement on social media in honor of National Women’s Equality Day:
“Womens Equality Day honors the expansion of women’s rights—and reminds us there is more to do. Because women cannot have full equality in this country as long as politicians are forcing women to stay pregnant when they don’t want to be.”
Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) also issued a statement, writing on social media that:
“Our democracy includes our voices because of women who struggled hard & long to win the right to vote. On #WomensEqualityDay we honor them. We must ensure equality for women & girls – it makes our country stronger.”
