TRI-CITIES, Wash.-An IRONMAN Triathlon is coming to the Tri-Cities in 2024.
The IRONMAN® 70.3® Washington Tri-Cities Triathlon is scheduled for Sunday, September 22, 2024 and was made possible as part of a three-year agreement with Visit Tri-Cities and the Cities of Richland and West Richland.
The international triathlon will also be held on September 21, 2025, and September 20, 2026 according to a press release announcing the race.
The event is expected to bring 2500 athletes plus an additional 7500 visitors, crews, and support staff to the area each year according to race organizers, inducing $6-$8 million in visitor spending to local businesses.
“IRONMAN is one of the most recognized global brands in endurance sports and we are thrilled they have selected the Tri-Cities to represent that brand,” said Kevin Lewis, CEO of Visit Tri-Cities.
The IRONMAN 70.3 Washington Tri-Cities will begin at Howard Amon Park in Richland, with a 1.2-mile down river point-to-point swim in the Columbia River.
At Columbia Point Park athletes will start the bike leg of the triathlon. The rolling 56-mile bike course through rural roads will feature well-known Tri-Cities wineries according to the press release on the race.
Once back in Richland athletes will transition to a 13.1-mile run along the Riverfront Trail and its many shoreline parks.
“This will be a great event that will bring people to enjoy our beautiful and great community, allowing us to share our wonderful recreation opportunities,” said Brent Gerry, Mayor of West Richland.
Priority registration for the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Washington Tri-Cities is open until October 24 at midnight, general registration opens on October 19.
