TRI-CITIES, Wash.-The second Monday of Oct. is Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Formerly known as Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples’ Day was formally recognized by President Biden in 2021 to recognize those who lived in America before Christopher Columbus came to the New World.
“On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, our Nation celebrates the invaluable contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples, recognizes their inherent sovereignty, and commits to honoring the Federal Government’s trust and treaty obligations to Tribal Nations,” President Biden said in proclaiming the holiday in 2021.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day (Oct. 14 this year) is a Federal Reserve bank holiday and most major banks will be closed, however, online banking services will still be available.
Both Federal and State Government buildings will be closed on Oct. 14 in honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, but FedEx will have modified services and UPS will operate normally, according to the shipping companies.
Grocery stores and most major retailers will be open and operating during normal business hours on Oct. 14
