LEWISTON, ID.-An 11-pound coho salmon recently caught in the Clearwater River near Lewiston is a new state record according to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

Matt Hosking caught the record-breaking salmon weighing 11.775 pounds and 32 3/4” long with a Yakima Bait Mag Lip lure according to a press release from the company.

“We were pulling Mag Lip through a big hole near the paper mill,” Hosking said of his catch, “When the rod buried, I thought I had a steelhead on the line, but the fish never jumped like steelhead normally do.”

Yakima Bait Company, based in Granger, Washington, has been manufacturing fishing lures since 1934.

“There are bigger Coho out there, but not many,” said Joe DuPont, Clearwater Region Fishery Manager. “Based on the 2,400 Coho we have trapped at Lower Granite Dam this year, only 2 would surpass the size of this fish.”
