Howard Amon Park Playground in Richland to get major upgrades starting Sept. 9

RICHLAND, Wash. – The Sturgeon Cove Playground in Howard Amon Park will be getting major upgrades throughout fall, with demolition and construction starting on Mon., Sept. 9.

The City of Richland says in a news release that the project is expected to take six to eight weeks to finish.

Planning for the upgrades started in 2023 with new features aimed at increasing accessibility, safety, capacity and enjoyment. Its design is based on a cruise boat theme with colors and accents inspired by the neighboring Columbia River.

New features include:

A replica paddle wheel cruise ship inspired by ones on the Columbia RiverDueling ziplinesMore swingsPlay areas for both preschool-aged children and all-agesSensory play equipmentAn inclusive whirl featureAn expression swing

The City says some nearby features will remain, including:

The Elephant SlideFish sculptural elementsRock climbing features

A new shade structure over the adjacent picnic tables will also be installed, thanks to a donation from community member Robert “Bob” Zinsli.

Visitors are asked to follow posted signage and safety instructions and to visit other nearby playgrounds in Richland while the playground is under construction.
