NEW YORK, NY.-Over six million people are affected by Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, according to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

The holidays can be a challenging time for families across the country caring for loved ones with dementia, however, some simple tips can ensure a safe, happy and dementia-friendly holiday season.

“People with dementia can still, and should be encouraged to, enjoy and participate in the spirit of the holiday season,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services.

Tips for a dementia-friendly holiday season from the AFA:

Keep things simple: Tone down your holiday display. Too much stimulation can be a challenge for someone suffering from dementia. Decorate over a series of days to avoid sudden changes to a loved one with dementia’s environment.Adapt traditional favorites: Build on favorite traditions, such as music, movies or looking at old holiday photos. Do activities such as sending out cards or baking with your loved one suffering from dementia.Start new traditions: If your loved one can no longer shop, include them in the gift wrapping process instead or go looking at Christmas lights together.Create a safe, calm space: Have a space ready for your loved one with dementia to go to during holiday gatherings and try to maintain a normal routine when scheduling holiday events.Think safety: Watch out for potential tripping hazards throughout the home. Dementia can cause changes in vision or depth perception so make sure no extension cords or decorations are in the way.

“By being adaptable and sensitive to the person’s needs and wishes, caregivers can help create a joyous, dementia-friendly holiday season for their loved one with dementia,” said Reeder.
