YAKIMA, Wash. – The 17-year-old who was shot in Yakima on June 24 has died, according to his family.
NonStop Local spoke with Vanessa and Jazmin Saavedra, cousins of Landynn Lewis, on Wednesday.
They said his actions that day saved his family’s lives.
The cousins said Lewis and his family were waiting in their car for a pizza order from a restaurant on Nob Hill Boulevard when they started being watched by two men. They became increasingly intimidating towards Lewis and his family until one started shooting at the car.
Lewis tried driving the car away from the shooter and was shot, crashing the car. His cousins said him driving away from the shooter saved his family.
After being in critical condition at a Seattle-area hospital, he was taken off life support on Tuesday. His family said he always brought a smile to everyone’s face and loved football, wrestling and his family.
Yakima Police say the alleged shooter was arrested under suspicion of first degree assault. An investigation is ongoing with witnesses being asked to contact the YPD Major Crimes Unit at 509-575-6200.
