WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a recent development, Hakeem Jeffries has been re-elected to lead the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives.

The New York Democrat secured support from his colleagues despite the party’s failure to regain majority control in the November election. Jeffries was chosen during an internal party vote at the Capitol.

Jeffries remains the highest-ranking Black elected official in Congress and is the first to hold the position of party leader. However, he fell short of being in place to win the gavel after House Republicans gained power alongside President-elect Donald Trump.
