HERMISTON, Ore.- The fifth annual AWS Girls’ Tech Day will be on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023.
The event, hosted by the Hermiston School District in partnership with Amazon Web Services, is meant to inspire and motivate girls and young women to pursue interests in science technology engineering arts and mathematics (STEAM) according to Superintendent Tricia Mooney.
“We always say in education it takes one adult to make an impact that we might not even know,” Mooney said. “What’s really exciting is that for a lot of our girls that one adult could have been today, and that one opportunity could have been today.”
AWS Community Engagement Manager Paul Butler said women make up only 25% of jobs in STEAM careers according to AWS research.
“One of the things we wanted to show is obviously that there are career opportunities, but also there are educational and hands-on opportunities in the communities where these girls live,” Butler said.
Middle School students ages 11 to 14 heard women in various STEAM careers during a panel before workshops with hands-on activities throughout Hermiston High Schoo
