YAKIMA, Wash.-Free books will be available for children at Yakima Valley Library branches on Dec. 23.

“Books are the perfect gift this holiday season, with something for everyone,” said Madison Gailus, Youth Services Coordinator for YVL.

Kids up until age 18 are invited to pick out a free book at YVL branches in Buena, Granger, Harrah, Mabton, Selah, Sunnyside, Toppenish, Wapato, West Valley, Yakima Central and Zillah on Monday, Dec. 23 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The book giveaway is in celebration of Jolabokaflod, an Icelandic tradition that started during World War II, when paper was one of the few things not rationed in Iceland and people gave books as Christmas gifts, according to a YVL press release on the giveaway.

The Zillah library will participate in the giveaway from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and books will be give out at all branches while supplies last.

“Come celebrate this special tradition by visiting the library to choose a book for yourself or a loved one, and share the love of reading,” said Gailus.
