Franklin Pool closed, Downtown Summer Nights canceled due to unhealthy air in Yakima County

YAKIMA, Wash.-Franklin Pool is now closed and Downtown Summer Nights has been canceled due to unhealthy air quality in the region and an air quality alert has been issued for Yakima County due to wildfire smoke.

The Downtown Association of Yakima released the following statement on the cancellation of Downtown Summer Nights on July 25:

“The health and well-being of our attendees, performers, volunteers, and vendors are our top priority.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding as we prioritize safety. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for our next scheduled event.”

The Washington State Department of Health is advising residents in areas impacted by wildfire smoke to limit the duration and intensity of outdoor activities and to stay indoors if possible with the doors and windows closed to keep smoke out.

Exposure to wildfire smoke can cause health problems, especially for the elderly or those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, according to the DOH, including:

Eye, nose and throat irritationFatigueHeadache and coughingWheezing or shortness of breathMental health concerns and psychological stress
