CLE ELUM, Wash.-The public is invited to provide feedback on a proposed fuel break to help reduce wildfire risk near Lake Cle Elum.
The fuel break is intended to reduce wildfire risk to the communities of Roslyn, Ronald, Suncadia and other smaller communities around the lake, according to the U.S. Forest Service-Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest.
Fuel breaks do not stop fires, however, they can slow fire spread and reduce fire intensity to give firefighters safer opportunities to fight them.
According to a social media post from the USFS, frequent occurrence of recent wildfires around Lake Cle Elum coupled with dense forest conditions, high fuel loading, high levels of recreation use, and expanding development combine to put communities and the public at a high risk to threats from wildfire.
Public comment on the proposed fuel break is requested by March. 15 and can be submitted electronically.
Comments may also be mailed to Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, Cle Elum Ranger District, Scott Robinson, Acting District Ranger, 803 W 2nd Street, Cle Elum, WA 98922.
More information on the proposal is also available online through the USFS.
