WASHINGTON, D.C.-Former President Jimmy Carter died on Dec. 29 at age 100 and flags will now fly at half-staff for the next 30 days.

President Biden directed that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff at the White House and at all public buildings, military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels throughout the United States and its territories for 30 days from the day of Carter’s death in a proclamation announcing the death of the 39th President.

In accordance with President Biden’s direction, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek ordered her state’s flags to half-staff and released a statement on former President Carter, which read in part:

“He exemplified optimism, an unshakable faith in the human spirit, and resolve to end suffering in his country and across the world. President Carter was a champion of common sense for the common good.”
