OLYMPIA, WA. – To help ensure fire and life safety when celebrating the new year, the State Fire Marshal’s Office released a list of safety tips for those who are lighting up fireworks.
According to a press release from the WSP State Fire Marshal’s Office, in 2022 Washington State reported 508 firework-related injuries and/or fires. These fires resulted in over $2.5 million in property loss.
The Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office would like to remind Washington residents that fireworks are banned in many cities and counties across the state. Those who plan on discharging fireworks should contact their local fire marshal’s office if they are unsure of the rules and regulations.
State Fireworks Law RCW 70.77.395 states that firework discharge periods are December 31, 6 p.m. to 12 a.m., and January 1, 12 a.m. to 1 a.m.
Follow this list of “Dos” when working with fireworks:
Ensure that all children have adult supervision when using fireworks.Only purchase fireworks from a Washington State licensed retailer.Have easy access to a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water.Only light one firework at a time.Discard fireworks appropriately and as directed.
To ensure safety, follow this list of “Do nots”:
Do not allow young children to handle fireworks, this includes sparklers which can burn up to 1200 degrees fahrenheit.Do not consume alcohol when handling fireworks. Do not stand over fireworks. Once lighted, back away immediately. Do not point fireworks at other people. Do not attempt to relight fireworks that failed to ignite.Do not wear loose clothing while using fireworks. Do not set off fireworks in metal or glass containers. Do not carry fireworks in pockets.
