BENTON COUNTY, Wash.- Three fires broke out on Saturday, prompting local officials to ask the public take steps ensure fire readiness.
According to Deputy Fire Chief Michael Heffner from the Kennewick Fire Department, firefighters responded to three residential fires. KFD and the Pasco Fire Department assisted Benton County Fire District in putting out a home fire Saturday morning. Although the cause of the fire is believed to be a minor playing with a lighter, the home did not have some alarms.
Both the American Red Cross and the KFD have urged taking a few life-saving fire safety steps to prepare for home fires. Officials advise the public to ensure that their homes are equipped with the correct number of up-to-date smoke alarms, including routine battery replacements. Additionally, experts recommend ensuring that all household members have a designated meeting spot outside the home and know two escape routes from every room.
Furthermore, firefighters stress the need for children to be familiar with smoke alarms, how they work, and the dangers of fire-causing instruments like matches and lighters.
