TRI-CITIES, Wash.-Following the arrest of Washington state Senator Jeff Wilson, a Republican from Longview, in Hong Kong on October 21 for flying with a gun, travelers may be wondering how to properly transport a gun on a plane.
According to the TSA and the Tri-Cities Airport, guns can be shipped on airplanes safely and securely if the proper steps are followed.
A traveler who wants to transport a firearm must have the gun in a locked case and disclose it when checking in according to Buck Taft, Director of the Tri-Cities Airport.
An airport employee will then check the weapon after they have been told about it by the traveler and must put a form in the case with the gun before re-locking it.
TSA regulations mandate that all guns that are being shipped on a plane must be in checked luggage and are never allowed in carry-ons.
According to Taft, it’s up to travelers to know what is allowed on a plane before boarding and the easiest way to make sure you are travelling safely is to check the TSA’s website or online with the particular airline you are flying.
