YAKIMA, Wash. – A Yakima man will spend 72 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of a stolen firearm, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of Washington.
Court documents say on Sept. 8, 2023, a police officer from Zillah approached a suspicious vehicle that had been parked at a gas station with its engine running for two hours.
Inside the car was 31-year-old Damian Iniguez, who was slumped over and asleep with his foot on the brake while the car was set to “drive.” The officer told him to put the car in park and turn it off, but Iniquez didn’t listen.
Iniquez was eventually arrested and patted down. The officer found a loaded pistol with an extended magazine in his sweatshirt pocket, which was found to have been stolen from Oregon in 2021.
Iniguez was not allowed to have a firearm due to a previous conviction.
“The unlawful possession of firearms by convicted felons poses a threat to the safety of our communities,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Richard R. Barker. “Mr. Iniguez’s case highlights the critical work of our local and federal law enforcement partners in removing firearms from the hands of those who are prohibited from having them. We will continue to pursue accountability for those who disregard federal firearm laws and endanger public safety.”
