OLYMPIA, Wash.-The end of daylight saving time on November 5 is a good reminder to check your smoke alarms after changing your clocks.
According to the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office, fall is a good time to test the smoke alarms throughout our homes and change the batteries if necessary to ensure that they are in proper working condition.
Home smoke alarm guidelines from the WSFM:
Smoke alarms should be installed inside every room where people sleep, outside every bedroom and on every level of your home.Install smoke alarms that have strobe-lights or bed-shakers if a member of your household is deaf or hard of hearing. If the alarm chirps in a smoke alarm with a non-replaceable 10-year battery replace the entire smoke alarm as soon as possible.Test smoke alarms and make sure all family members know what the alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear it.Smoke alarms should be connected so if one sounds, they all sound.Contact your landlord or property manager if your rental property does not have smoke alarms.
