More than 9 million visitors traveled to Hawai’i in 2023, contributing to a record-breaking $20.66 billion in visitor spending. Amid surging tourism, Fairmont Orchid is redefining “sustainable luxury,” unveiling a multimillion-dollar renovation while championing coral reef restoration at Pauoa Bay.
Located along the island of Hawaiʻi stunning Kohala Coast, this five-star resort blends modern hospitality with environmental responsibility. The renovation highlights Hawai’i cultural heritage, while the resort’s partnership with the ʻĀkoʻakoʻa Reef Restoration Program focuses on preserving the island’s vital coral reefs, including those just beyond its shores in Pauoa Bay.
The resort’s renovation, completed in phases throughout 2024, includes updates to all guest rooms, meeting spaces, and the exclusive Fairmont Gold Floor. Inspired by the Aloha State’s natural beauty, the redesign combines local culture with modern luxury. New colors, textures, and materials inspired by the island’s landscapes and traditions create a fresh yet meaningful experience for guests.
“It’s our hope that this extensive refresh will enhance the guest experience, celebrate the rich cultural heritage of this extraordinary island, and take oceanfront luxury at Fairmont Orchid to the next level,” shares Chris Sessions, Director of Sales & Marketing at Fairmont Orchid.
The updates span 32,000 square feet of indoor space and 76,000 square feet of outdoor venues, offering a flexible backdrop for everything from intimate gatherings to grand celebrations. New carpets, modern lighting, and decorative accents make every area inviting.
Session says, “Our attention to detail in the design and functionality of these refreshed spaces ensures that guests will enjoy a harmonious blend of tropical elegance and modern luxury, setting a new standard for excellence in hospitality here in Hawai’i.”
As one of the renovation’s premier features, the Fairmont Gold Floor stands out as a private escape for guests seeking a top-tier experience. The space combines modern Hawaiian style with exceptional service, including private check-in, a dedicated concierge, and sunset hors d’oeuvres on the lanai (veranda). With its focus on locally inspired flavors and personal touches, the Gold Floor creates a one-of-a-kind, unforgettable stay.
Gavin Doyle, a frequent traveler and recent guest at the Fairmont Orchid, says, “I especially enjoyed the sprawling lawn that leads up to the pool and beachside area. During our trip, I enjoyed some time in the Spa Without Walls. I had an outdoor massage, which was so peaceful, with a stream flowing beside the little huts where the massages took place.”
Pioneering Coral Reef Restoration
Fairmont Orchid isn’t just transforming its spaces. It’s also taking a lead in protecting Hawai’i’s natural environment. As the first hotel in the state to partner with the ʻĀkoʻakoʻa Reef Restoration Program, the resort is helping to restore coral reefs along West Hawai’i, including its own Pauoa Bay.
These reefs, which face challenges like climate change, pollution, and overfishing, play a crucial role in the island’s ecosystem and are a priority for preservation.
“As stewards of Pauoa Bay, we embrace both the privilege and responsibility of protecting this vital ecosystem,” says Michael Pye, Regional Vice President of Fairmont Hawai’i. “We’re thrilled to support the ʻĀkoʻakoʻa Reef Restoration Program, working with the local community, our colleagues, and guests to join us as guardians of this Hawai’i Island treasure.”
The program began with rescuing corals broken loose by strong ocean waves. In August, the ʻĀkoʻakoʻa dive team collected these corals and transported them to a state-of-the-art research and propagation facility in Kailua-Kona.
Facility staff care for corals in a specialized nursery where they can reproduce. Once their offspring are ready, they’ll be returned to Pauoa Bay to help rebuild the reef and encourage new growth.
“With our commitment to this coral reef restoration program,” says Pye, “we hope to preserve the cultural heritage and ecological significance of the bay and West Hawai’i for future generations.”
Guests can connect with the project by meeting the resort’s beach ambassadors, who share stories and details about the coral restoration work.
In the future, Fairmont Orchid hopes to offer snorkeling tours that let visitors see the restoration efforts up close. These experiences will give guests a deeper understanding of the reef’s importance and how their stay supports its recovery.
The resort invites guests to make an even greater impact and contribute to its Keiki, Reef, and Reforestation Fund. Donations directly support ongoing coral planting efforts and other environmental programs that preserve Hawai’i’s unique ecosystems for generations.
Greg Asner, founder of the ʻĀkoʻakoʻa Reef Restoration Program and Director of the Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science at Arizona State University, highlighted the power of working together to create lasting change. “Our vision for a thriving coastline can only be realized through partnerships like this one with Fairmont Orchid. We’re excited to have the support and partnership of the local community and the resort as we embark on this meaningful journey together,” says Asner.
