YAKIMA, Wash.-Plan for traffic delays this summer if your route goes down Nob Hill Boulevard.
A grind and overlay project has begun spanning from 3rd Avenue to 16th Avenue. Crews will be tearing up the existing road before repaving Nob Hill with fresh asphalt.
“It isn’t a complete rebuild of a street like we’re seeing on North 1st Street,” says Randy Beehler, the City of Yakima’s spokesperson. “It is more a temporary measure to extend the life of a roadway.”
Beehler says the project could extend Nob Hill’s life by 25-30 years. The last time the road had this maintenance done was around 25 years ago when Nob Hill was extended.
As the calendar turns to May, you can’t see the construction yet, but drivers will soon see the delays.
When construction begins, traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction, but access to homes and businesses along the road will be preserved as much as possible.
“For most of the project, there shouldn’t be complete closures of that stretch,” says Beehler. “There may be temporary closures for movement of machines, equipment, that kind of stuff.”
A press release from the city gives completion date of “late summer.” Beehler explains the timeline can change depending on weather, materials and other construction delays.
If all goes to plan, expect to see crews leave Nob Hill in mid-to-late August.
“It’s going to be more difficult to get through there,” says Beehler. “But the bottom line is it’s a temporary inconvenience that will eventually result in a much nicer roadway.”
