WASHINGTON – As election day approaches, there is still time for residents to register and cast their ballots. Voters can take advantage of same-day registration up until 8:00 p.m. on election night.
In 2020, around 1,400 Benton County voters registered in-person on the day before and on election day itself. This year, a similar turnout is expected on November 5.
For those registering on election day, a Washington state-issued ID and a Social Security number are required.
Voters are reminded to be careful when signing their ballots, as Benton County’s Chief Deputy Auditor Lorene Rowe noted some voters may rush the signature and delay their vote being counted.
“A lot of times that signature that we’re looking at on your registration comes directly from your driver’s license,” says Rowe. “So, if there’s any kind of a discrepancy that we can’t match those two signatures, chances are it might get suspended.”
If a signature mismatch occurs, the auditor’s office will reach out to voters to resolve the issue before ballots are certified on November 26.
“If that happens, there’s no worry. We’re going to identify it. We’re going to notify you text letter or phone call or all three,” Rowe said.
Voters can check the status of their ballots by visiting VoteWA Voter Portal.
Safety is also a priority at voting centers. Despite threats to ballot safety in recent weeks, there will be appropriate measures to protect voters.
“There is no need to be afraid to go and cast your vote,” says Rowe. “Our voting centers are manned during the day, during our open hours with armed security. We’re ready and we put a stop to anything. We don’t hesitate.”
As election day nears, Washington residents are encouraged to participate and ensure their voices are heard.
