TOPPENISH, Wash.-Heritage University will be hosting an El Grito de Independencia celebration on campus in honor of Mexican Independence Day on Saturday, Sept. 14. from 6-9 p.m.
The free celebration will be open to the public and will feature Mexican-style activities and games, including performances of Los De La Z and folklore dance group Grupo La Esperanza and the participation of Yakima Aztec Dancers, according to Heritage.
El Grito de Independencia celebrates the historical “Cry of Dolores,” the moment that started the Mexican War of Independence against Spanish rule.
A re-enactment of the “Cry of Dolores” will take place at 7:30 p.m. and will also include Loteria games, kid crafts, food, traditional dance performances, live music and a resource fair, according to Heritage.
